Have you ever gone through an old box of photographs and enjoy the feeling of pieces of your past coming together in a new way? Dr. Jack Butler, our guest today, did exactly that, but he did not go through a box of old pictures, but through the notes written by Dr. Bowen about his seminal research a the National Mental Health Institute. This research project that involved families with a member with schizophrenia was central to the birth to the family psychotherapy movement. Dr. Bowen was a careful researcher. He systematically recorded his keen observations and his thoughts, and Dr. Butler organized them in a recently published book: The Origins of Family Psychotherapy: The NIMH Family Study Project. Dr. Butler is a social worker and marriage and family therapists. He has published extensively about Bowen theory and will take us in a journey of re-discovering the process from a set of observations to the development of a whole new theory on human functioning.

The Bowen Center is a non for profit dedicated to the development of Bowen family systems theory into a science of human behavior; to assist individuals, families, communities, and organizations in addressing major life changes through understanding and improvising human relationships.

The center carries out its mission locally, nationally, and internationally through training and online programs, conferences, research, clinical services, and its website and publications. The Bowen Center for the Study of the Family is an educational, research, and clinical center incorporated as a 501©(3) tax-exempt organization in the District of Columbia.
