Montblanc StarWalker – come, walk in the sky
The Montblanc StarWalker is not your typical Montblanc. It has a bulbous cap and a barrel that tapers towards the end, giving it a unique shape – one that is immediately noticed, making it highly sought after as a conversation piece. The placement of the ubiquitous, read trademark, Montblanc star at the top end of the pen too is inimitably executed, with the effect of the star appearing to be floating in space when viewed from the top.
The pen had a makeover and is now made of the same precious resin that the coveted 149 is made of, but mine is a metal pen from an earlier avatar, which adds just that much more value to it as a collectible.
The other features of the pen that needs to be pointed out are – the nonconformist clip, which not only extends beyond the cap end, and when closed, well into the barrel and the Montblanc name etched on the clip band, which is followed by three parallel lines which are aimed at letting the world know about the three founders of the brand. Needless to say, it is small details like these that sets the Montblanc apart – quirks if you may, that continue to arrest the fascination of innumerable followers of the brand.
The pen that we are reviewing here was one that was gifted to me by none other than writing, lettering, and calligraphy master, the Maestro, K C Janardhan. It will not be out of place to mention here that Prof Janardhan has had a long association with the brand as is as revered an expert of all things Montblanc as anyone else, which makes the pen not only a treasured possession but also one that enjoys a very high position as a collectible.
This pen I have been told works only with a cartridge and I must make it a point to find out if I can get a converter attached to it as that would make it more convenient for me to use the pen. While the cartridge works just as well, I have my reservations, unfounded perhaps, of running out of ink. The valid reason for opting to have a converter installed of course is that a converter is more eco-friendly as it does not lead to the discarded plastic cartridges adding to the pollution.
What do I say about the writing of the pen? The balance, the make, the look and, the feel? Well, excellent on all counts! The wet, broad lines are reason enough to fall in love with the StarWalker and ensure carrying it in one’s pocket forever. The pen posts beautifully (there are threads at the bottom end of the pen that screws in the cap, with the clip aligning perfectly with the nib), and while I am not one who normally posts his pens, it is quite comfortable to write with the pen posted. Another thing, the StarWalker is not at all heavy and despite the German origin, (you know large European hands and all that) it fits in snugly as if it was made with me firmly in the mind of the creators. I guess this is another reason that separates the champion pen-turners from the others. An entity does not dominate the popular perception around the world for more than a hundred years for nothing, you know.
Montblanc pens, it will not be out of place to mention here, enjoys a status in the community that is almost unassailable. While the snow-bedecked star logo and the Meisterstuck range with its reigning 149 may be symbols that enjoy the most recall around the world, the StarWalker, as a performer is no less!
