Praise God!
The Shepherd Knows His Sheep. Jesus celebrates Hanukkah. It just reminds me how OLD these traditions are… and were even then. What a beautiful thing. Jesus was Jewish. We must never forget that.
He gets surrounded and they ask Him to reveal Himself already if he is Messiah. Imagine the angry energy, the hate that must have filled the air… also the fear. All of this along with the rage… All Jesus did here was walk in the Temple- He wasn’t even teaching so they were probably waiting for Him.
Again, the Messiah they wanted was political. A warrior. His works, as He tells them, should have clarified most obviously what He has already told them. They were also trying to set Him up. If He explicitly calls Himself King, Messiah- they can not only accuse Him of blasphemy but ALSO take Him before Rome as a political enemy of the state.
And, Because they can not know, believe, understand- Jesus tells them they are not His sheep which is WHY they don’t know His voice. They couldn’t be His sheep if they STILL didn’t see the forest through the trees. I wonder how many believed after his crucifixion or if that just caused them to dismiss Jesus entirely. After all- why would Messiah go down like that.
Jesus more specifically revealed Himself as Messiah to those who were not part of the Jewish community, such as the Samaritan woman of John 4:1-26. With these, there was less chance of misunderstanding who He was and what He came to do.- Guzek
Not only are they not true shepherds but they aren’t even true sheep. That is terrifying.
I am so grateful that I cannot be snatched out of His hand. Even after falling by the wayside. It is of enormous comfort to me that I am His. I get to spend eternity with Him. What a promise! I will never lose Him because He will never lose me.
Christ declares that His people “shall never perish.” Weak as they are they shall all be saved. Not one of them shall be lost and cast away – not one of them shall miss heaven. If they err, they shall be brought back; if they fall, they shall be raised. The enemies of their souls may be strong and mighty, but their Savior is mightier; and none shall pluck them out of their Savior’s hands.- JC Ryle
Herschel H. Hobbs- Note that we do not hold on to Jesus or the Father. We are held by them. And before either man, thing, or devil can recapture to destroy us, such must overcome both the Son and the Father. And, of course, that is impossible.
Renewed Efforts to Stone Jesus. They are always trying to stone Him for doing miracles. It is incredible. And the fact that they deny Him by saying it is because He blasphemes is even more incredible. They are so blind. And yet they CANNOT Stone Him. They have no power of God. They never have. Not until God lays His life down…
They understood well that he was claiming to be God- He and God are One, and that was a sin punishable by stoning. Apparently it never occurred to them that Jesus could be who he said he was.- Johnson
Jesus wanted us to be one as He and the Father are one (John 17:11, 17:21). Such oneness cannot exist without an equality of essence, and all believers have this equality (Galatians 3:26-28), even as the Father and Son have this equality.- Guzek
“If they cannot answer holy arguments with fair reasonings, they can give hard answers with stones. If you cannot destroy the reasoning, you may, perhaps, destroy the reasoner.” (Spurgeon) This is how evil manifests to this day.
Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, “You are gods” ’? If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? (NKJV)
Jesus reasoned, “If God gave these unjust judges the title ‘gods’ because of their office, why do you consider it blasphemy that I call Myself the ‘Son of God’ in light of the testimony of Me and My works?”- Guzel
In his defense, Jesus pulled out Psalm 82, a passage his stoners were acquainted with. Set in the context of a court, this psalm tells about God warning the gods, or judges, of the earth that they will be judged someday. Jesus’ argument is that God calls humans “gods” because in serving as judges they participate in a function that is reserved for God. If Scripture gives human judges this honorary title, how much greater right to the title “God” does Jesus have, who is God by nature!- Johnson
Even His plea for them to believe in the WORKS that He did to the Glory of God - so that they might believe in Him… He wanted them to be healed- to not be blind. Instead, they tried to stone Him again.
The Believers Beyond Jordan. He retreated to where it all began- where John the Baptizer baptized and paved the way for Jesus. There Jesus taught and preached and people believed.
