How effective is EMDR for Foster Kids and Adopted Kids? Does EMDR Work for traumas kids from hard places have experienced?
A lot of trauma can be blocked, or processed in a way that makes it extremely sensitive. By sensitive, if anything wells up that memory (even a trauma memory that kids do not consciously remember) it may trigger big feelings and challenging behaviors.
Many therapists and counselors have begun utilizing EMDR. Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing is a therapy that attempts to package and store these trauma memories in a safer way. This enables foster kids, adopted kids, foster adopt kids, or anyone from a hard place to talk about these past experiences and traumas without intense fears and feelings re-traumatizing them. This can be a critical tool for foster parents as they work with foster kids or foster adopt kids who are frequently triggered by reminders of their past.
So, how did EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) Therapy work for our family? Do I think it will work for other kids from hard places? Will it be an effective tool for connected parenting or trauma informed care? Should foster kids, adopted kids, and foster adopt kids try it? Watch the video to find out.
*Please note that I am not a trained therapist or EMDR expert. The intent of this video is to share our experience.
