Today we talk about loading your kayak.
Not very glamorous, but your hauling straps just may be one of the most important items in your gear bag. A bad pair could mean an airborne watercraft going down the highway. No other item in your gear bag can be as lethal. These days, I see some really poor product being sold in chain stores and online and you need to know what to watch out for so you aren’t being swindled and risking the safety of your kayak and others on the road.
In this video, I show you some considerations to look for when selecting your straps. Not all straps are the same! You’ll also see how we store our straps so they don’t get tangled.
We decided to purchase a bulk load of the straps we use because all too often when somebody picks up a boat from us the straps they are using are suboptimal. A good pair of NRS or Yakima/Thule straps are about $18-$20. Even better, The “Happy Paddlin” straps use polyester (I misspoke in vid and said polypropylene which is obviously incorrect) webbing for better UV resistance, strength and softness on your hands . We aren’t trying to get rich selling straps but if you want some and want to support our efforts, hit us up at:
