The iconic James Bond Vesper Martini appears in Ian Fleming’s 1953 novel Casino Royale (and is ordered exactly the same way in the 2006 film).
The classic modern recipe (as close as possible to Bond’s original)
Ingredients
3 measures (3 oz / 90 ml) gin → traditionally Gordon’s (a classic London Dry style)
1 measure (1 oz / 30 ml) vodka → good-quality grain vodka (Bond doesn’t specify, but something neutral like Stolichnaya or Belvedere works)
½ measure (0.5 oz / 15 ml) Kina Lillet → this no longer exists. The closest modern substitute is Lillet Blanc (less bitter and quinine-heavy than the original). Many purists now prefer Cocchi Americano or Kina L’Aéro d’Or for a more authentic bitter edge.
Garnish
A large, thin slice (or long spiral) of lemon peel
Method
Pour gin, vodka, and Kina Lillet (or substitute) into a cocktail shaker filled with plenty of cracked ice.
Shake very hard until ice-cold (Bond explicitly says “shake,” not stir—heresy to some martini purists).
Strain into a chilled deep champagne goblet, coupe, or large martini glass.
Express a long, thin piece of lemon peel over the drink and drop it in (or drape it elegantly on the rim).
2025 “most authentic” version (preferred by many cocktail historians)
3 oz London Dry gin (Gordon’s, Tanqueray, or Beefeater)
1 oz 100-proof vodka (to mimic the higher-proof spirits of the 1950s)
0.5 oz Cocchi Americano or Kina L’Aéro d’Or
→ Shake hard, double-strain into a frozen coupe, large lemon twist.
