This hymn was written by John Newton, an English Angelican clergyman and former slave ship captain. It was written in 1772 to accompany a New Year's Day sermon he delivered in 1773 in Olney, England.
The original title was "Faith's Review and Expectation" and first appeared in print in the collection Olney Hymns (1779).
