American Foulbrood (AFB) is a spore forming bacterial honey bee disease. The spore can survive for decades and grow in honey bee larvae causing the death of brood, and the formation of more spores. With a usually low incidence, the disease has been endemic in NYS since the 1800’s with occasional outbreaks. Beekeepers are responsible for inspecting their hives and the brood chamber frequently to check for diseases such as AFB. Visual inspection and use of the Vita Kits are useful to confirm an infection. If positive identification of AFB occurs, contact the NYS State Apiarist.
Mathew was invited to inspect the 8 hives at the Tinker Park Apiary for the purpose of teaching a few beekeepers from the Rochester Beekeepers club, and to facilitate the recording of this video. 4 hives were used for this video;2 hives were robbed out deadouts.
