0:00 Introduction by Ellie about being home-schooled
1:50 Sheltered
When Ellie asks "Is it OK if we sing a couple more?" the answer is always "YES PLEASE!!!"
(Aside - when Blake plays the electric guitar riff at the beginning and after the choruses, so wet with reverb, doesn't that tone remind you of the theme from the show Twin Peaks? A little?)
I heard the acoustic debut of @thecastellows original song Sheltered in Cleveland earlier last year. Loved it then: • The Castellows - Sheltered (unreleased liv... It is a great song with the full band arrangement too.
Ellie does the introduction to this song as she always does explaining that this is a personal song about how they were raised, home-schooled. She adds that upbringing made them show they are, kept them close and supported them in playing music together too. You can see how close the Balkcom sisters are together at this show with Ellie and Lily fixing/brushing each others hair before different songs, Lily holding Powell's hand in Broke, whispering to her and mouthing 'thank you' to Ellie. Check out Broke at this show before it breaks the internet: • The Castellows - Broke, Archer Music Hall,...
I think maybe (?) the lyrics to Sheltered could have had a twist in the last chorus maybe taking the doubt away about the singer feeling sheltered/foolish and instead asserting her strength gained from the nurturing of home schooling and a close family/community. But hey the song works. What do you think? It's nice to hear Ellie explain in advance that they don't feel lessened by the experience in the least. Back in Dothan she said they were not the "cool kids" growing up and that was fine - I must agree - sometimes the cool kids just peak in high school LOL! Truth be told, the public school system where my wife works as a special needs assistant is not always efficient and there are a lot of distractions (I hear this from her on a regular basis). Bravo to anyone who can do home schooling and get the positive outcomes we see in Ellie, Lily and Powell. Well done Mrs. and Mr. Balkcom!!!
You must go see these talented ladies and gents play live when you get chance. We drove 15 hours back and forth from Toronto to get to this show and it was TOTALLY worth it.
Enjoy :)

PS - the bass from the venue PA was quite loud and was even shaking my buddy's camera at times. Justin would hit a low cello note (I think he was pitch shifting his fiddle down an octave in Broke) and cameras/video would shake. You can here the bass frequencies are way up in the mix here too in Sheltered. BTW Ellie used to do the intro to this song before the music started and I think it was easier to hear her song inspiration that way ... something they could go back to IMHO. Its pretty clear to hear here but at some shows it was not.
