Most democracies celebrate coalition governments as peak consensus. Japan just chose differently.
Prime Minister Takeuchi has a 78% approval rating. She called a snap election, not for ego, but to escape endless negotiation and actually pass the legislation people elected her to deliver.
Australia's had minority Senates. Europe cycles through coalition after coalition. We've normalised the gridlock.
But when does negotiation become obstruction? When does consensus-building become an excuse for inaction?
Takeuchi saw an opening for a majority and took it. Not because majorities are inherently better—but because they force accountability. No coalition partners to hide behind.
Is that anti-democratic? Or the clearest expression of democratic will?
