UN highlights International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with detailed survey

The UN Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC), the office in charge of fighting against illicit drugs and international crime, is leading a worldwide campaign to raise global awareness on the risks that illicit drugs represent to society.

Most used drugs
According to the 2015 Global Drug Survey, founded by English psychiatrist Adam Winstock, with over 100,000 people participating in 50 countries, the three most used illicit drugs are cocaine, amphetamine-type stimulants and cannabis.

Cocaine
According to UNODC figures, the global cocaine seizures increased to 671 tons in 2012, and the main increases occurred in South America and Western and Central Europe. Some of the most common effects of cocaine abuse are:

Euphoria
Excessive energy and talkativeness
Alertness
Reduced appetite and sleep
PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS:
Constriction of blood vessels
Dilated pupils
Increase in body temperature, heart rate and blood pressure

Amphetamine-type stimulants
Although the misuse of prescription medications for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is common, only a few countries report any prevalence of misuse among the general and youth population. Some of its consequences are:

Increased wakefulness and attention
Decreased appetite and sleep
Sudden euphoria
Increased release of dopamine generating motivation and experience of pleasure
PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS:
Increased heart rate

Increased respiration
Irregular heartbeat
Excessive released dopamine levels that affect nervous system and produce changes in the brain

Cannabis
Despite global cannabis use has decreased, in the United States, the lower perceived risk of cannabis use has led to an increase in its use, which in some states is already legal for recreational use. Some of its effects are:

PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS:
Euphoria
Relaxation
Altered senses and uncontrollable laughter
Sleepiness, depression
Sometimes it can produce anxiety, mistrust and paranoia

PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS:
Increased heartbeat
Cannabis expands and irritates lungs
Blood vessels in the eyes dilate
Blood’s capacity to transport oxygen is reduced
Poor mental health and attention

Launching an anti-drug struggle to eliminate the drug scourge is the historical responsibility of the Chinese government with laws and regulations, strictly prohibiting illegal drugs. It has adopted all necessary measures and done its utmost to ban illicit drugs for the benefit of the people.
