In this video brought to you by Synapse brain and spine foundation, Dr.Jaydev Panchwagh discusses the terms that are most often used with regards to spine pathologies. This video is published in the interest of public education and for a better understanding of spine surgery, spine problems and backpain.
What is Spondylosis?
It is arthritis of the bones of the spinal column
What is Spondylolisthesis?
It is slippage or movement of one vertebra over the other. There are many grades of spondylolisthesis, the severest of them causing very severe, debilitating back pain in the patients. Spine surgery for the same involves bringing the vertebrae back to their original alignment and fixing them in that place so that they do not slip back to the abnormal position. This is called Spine fixation or screw-rod fixation. It may be done unilaterally or bilaterally.
What is Prolapsed disc?
It is the extrusion of nucleus pulposus from a tear in the annulus Fibrosus. Both of these structures form the inner and outer components of intervertebral disc. When there is a tear in the outer ring or annulus fibrosus, a small or large part of the inner nucleus pulposus can herniate or extrude out into the spinal canal through this tear. This is called prolapsed disc or herniated disc or disc prolapse or disc herniation.
What is Radiculopathy?
When a prolapsed disc impinges on the nerve root exiting from the spinal cord, it causes root compression resulting in pain along the distribution of the nerve. This is called radiculopathy. This is a pinched nerve. If it occurs along the distribution of the sciatic nerve, its called Sciatica.
What is Myelopathy?
Multiple level disc prolapses or canal stenosis causing compression of the spinal cord causes symptoms of Myelopathy.
Canal Stenosis affecting the lumbar spinal canal is called lumbar canal stenosis, and that affecting the cervical spinal canal is called cervical canal stenosis.
