Transcript: The U.S. drops 14.7 million worms on Panama every week. Yes, you heard that right.
But why are they doing this?
Well, the United States conducts a weekly operation of dropping millions of live flies over the Panama-Colombia border. This operation dubbed the "Great American Worm Wall," is a long-standing collaboration to control the population of the New World screwworm, a species that poses a significant threat to livestock and humans.
The New World screwworm lays eggs in open wounds of warm-blooded mammals, and when the larvae hatch, they cause severe pain in the host animal. This operation aims to control the screwworm population by disrupting the mating process through the dropping of sterilized male flies, eventually reducing the population.
The entire program consists of a fly factory in Panama, sterilization procedures, aerial drops, and ground monitoring to prevent any outbreaks. This effort costs the U.S. around $15 million annually, but as the saying goes, "prevention is better than cure."
