These methods take some practice to master, but they can increase interest or function in your garden, particularly with fruit trees and other small flowering trees.

Espalier pruning involves training a tree to grow in two dimensions, usually along a wall or fence. It is often used in tight spaces or along the perimeter of a garden. The step-over pruning technique is often used to line paths, and trains trees to grow low to the grow and horizontally along a structure. Lastly, Quenouille pruning involves shaping a tree into a conical shape with main layers of branches that are usually trained with a weight or are tied to the ground.
