In this clip from our video ‘Honest Answers to 9 Common Dementia Care Questions', Dr Michelle, an independent consultant clinical psychologist, Paschalina, a Registered Care Manager at Home Instead, and Tony, a family carer, share their thoughts on how carers can explain their experiences to friends and family.

Paschalina explains that carers should try to be open, because so much depends on a good support network. When someone is diagnosed with dementia, wider friends and family often step back, which can leave carers like you more isolated. She highlights the stigma that surrounds dementia and how relationships can be affected when you’re caring for someone with dementia.

Tony, who cares for his sister with dementia, says that openness and vulnerability are key in helping people understand what it's like to care for someone with dementia, even if they are difficult. He shares his own story of simply emailing a long-time friend to describe his situation, which gave his friend a much better understanding of what he was going through, and helped him feel less isolated.

Paschalina adds that “coping is not good enough,” encouraging carers to think beyond just surviving and instead ask, “What are you doing to live well with it? To thrive?”

This clip is taken from the full 17-minute video where 9 of the most common dementia care questions are answered by Michelle, Paschalina, and Tony, combining professional and lived experience.

In this video you will learn:
▶ Help on how to communicate your role as a carer to friends and family.
▶ Why openness and vulnerability are key to reducing isolation.
▶ How stigma affects carers and their support networks.
▶ Why just “coping” is not enough
