First off, infrared light, which is just beyond red light, is about 750nm to 1,000,000nm. I'm shooting in 830nm to approximately 1,100nm. That range works very much like visible light, except our eyes can't see it. In my video, anything that reflects a lot of that range of infrared will appear white. And if it reflects very little, it will appear black.
The range of 8,000nm–15,000nm infrared is what "thermal imaging" uses, like in the Predator movies. Represented in monochrome, or red through blue. Again, my video is in a much smaller wavelength of infrared that does not indicate temperature.
I used my highly modified Canon R7 camera for this video, with a zoom lens set to a 10mm focal length.
As for the camera's modifications, first I had the internal filter replaced with a 830nm infrared filter.
Then I had the color filter array removed as well. Which allows in even more infrared light. Videos are now bright enough I can record even with a seriously overcast, cloudy, grey sky, and still have things look bright enough at 4K60. Only downside is the camera will forever be monochrome.
This camera by itself is seriously not meant for the task at hand. Image stabilization didn't seem as nice as a proper action cam, and I lacked a gimbal. Thus I stuck to an easy cruising trail, so I could focus on holding the camera as steady as possible. Also, this was my first ski run of the season, so my legs were a bit wobbly. I do like how it turned out, as I found a classic Vermont-style ski trail through the woods that I feel just worked.
The wind noise was a disaster for many parts of the video. So I replaced most of it with music. Figured a slightly odd collection was a match for doing something as odd as an infrared ski video.
YouTube provided music used, in order:
Alaska Sky - Patrick Patrikios
Like It Loud - Dyalla
Robots and Aliens - Joel Cummins
Press Fuse - French Fuse
As I get towards the bottom of the mountain, the frost and snow up in the trees goes away, and the evergreen leaves/needles really start to stand out, in bright white, from the bare branches of the other trees.
