Govind Ballabh Pant, a legal luminary and a freedom fighter, was born on 10 September 1887 in Khoont village near Almora.
One of the architects of modern India, Pant played a pivotal role in the movement for India's Independence, alongside Gandhi, Nehru and Patel.
He participated in the protests against Simon Commission in 1928. Pant's large figure made him an easy target for the police and he sustained severe injuries which prevented him from straightening his back for the rest of his life.
In 1930, he was arrested and imprisoned for several weeks for organising Salt March. In 1933, he was arrested and imprisoned for seven months for attending a session of the
provincial Congress.
In 1940, Pant was arrested and imprisoned for helping organise the Satyagraha and again in 1942 he was arrested for signing the Quit India resolution, and spent three years in
Ahmednagar Fort.
In post independence era he served as the Home Minister of the nation and also as the first Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and Chief Minister of United Provinces.
He died on 7 March 1961 at the age of 74. At that time he was still in office as the Home Minister of India.
