In this documentary, The Factoran takes you deep inside mega-scale industrial plants where e-waste is shredded into fragments, separated by magnets, induction currents, and optical sorters, then fed into electric arc furnaces blazing above two thousand seven hundred degrees Fahrenheit. Under arcs hotter than lightning, steel scrap liquefies into molten metal — impurities skimmed away, composition tuned with carbon, manganese or chromium, and cast into billets glowing red like magma. Inside rolling mills, these billets are reheated to about two thousand three hundred degrees Fahrenheit, stretched, flattened and formed into beams, coils, or rebar strong enough to hold up highways, factories and entire cities.
