Madam C.J. Walker, born Sarah Breedlove on December 23, 1867, in Delta, Louisiana, was an African American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and activist.
She is the first female self-made millionaire in America, largely due to the success of her hair care products aimed at African American women. She developed a line of beauty and hair products specifically designed for African American women after struggling with hair loss herself.
This led to the founding of the Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company in 1905. She also trained a nationwide network of sales agents, many of whom were Black women, offering them financial independence and empowering them.
In addition to her business achievements, Walker was a philanthropist and a civil rights activist. She used her wealth to support various causes, including donations to organisations fighting racial injustice, education, and Black communities.
Walker passed away on May 25, 1919, but her legacy as a pioneering businesswoman and a powerful figure in African American history endures. She broke barriers in both the beauty industry and society, making significant contributions to the empowerment of African American women.
