Leaving Hùisinis Beach on the Isle of Harris, Outer Hebrides, we look across the Atlantic to the abandoned island of Scarp and uncover one of the strangest stories in Scottish history — the Rocket Post experiment — before beginning our drive back along one of the most spectacular single-track roads in Scotland.
This episode follows our Outer Hebrides road trip through Harris, travelling via Tarbert and across to the Isle of Scalpay, discovering remote places, unexpected sights and incredible scenery along what we believe may actually rival the famous Applecross Pass.

About this episode
Standing above Hùisinis we look out to Scarp Island, now uninhabited but once a close-knit Hebridean community.
In July 1934 German inventor Gerhard Zucker attempted to deliver the island’s mail by rocket. The rocket exploded shortly after launch, the mail was scattered, and the experiment failed — but it became one of the most famous stories in the Outer Hebrides and later inspired the film The Rocket Post.
Historically the men of the island met every morning in a gathering known as the “parliament” to decide the day’s work. After the school closed in 1967 and the post office in 1968, the final residents left on 2 December 1971.
We then leave Hùisinis and drive the only road in and out — a dramatic Atlantic coastal route of mountains, moorland and ocean views. We genuinely think this road may be an even better drive than the Bealach na Bà at Applecross.
Along the way we pass roaming cattle and one of the most unexpected sights in the Hebrides — Bunabhainneadar Tennis Court, often described as the most remote tennis court in the world.
Continuing through Tarbert, the main settlement on Harris, we explore how the landscape changes before crossing the bridge onto the Isle of Scalpay.
Connected to Harris since 1997, Scalpay is a traditional fishing island with strong Gaelic heritage. We walk around the harbour and share its connection to Bonnie Prince Charlie, who hid nearby after the Battle of Culloden. The island is also home to Eilean Glas Lighthouse, completed in 1789 and one of the earliest lights built by the Northern Lighthouse Board.
After more Hebridean scenery we finish the day at a remote park-up and cook a classic campervan meal — haggis and sides — overlooking the wild Atlantic coast.
If you enjoy Scottish island travel, road trips, history and campervan adventures, the Outer Hebrides is one of the most rewarding journeys you can make in the UK.
