Blood clotting is a life-saving process that stops bleeding when a blood vessel is injured. It involves platelets, clotting factors, and a series of enzyme-controlled reactions.
1. Injury to Blood Vessel
When a blood vessel is damaged, the exposed collagen triggers the process of clot formation.
2. Platelet Plug Formation
Platelets stick to the injured site.
They become activated and release chemicals like ADP and thromboxane A₂.
This forms a temporary platelet plug
3. Activation of Clotting Factors
A cascade of reactions begins through two pathways:
Intrinsic pathway (inside blood)
Extrinsic pathway (from damaged tissues)
Both pathways meet at the common pathway.
4. Formation of Thrombin
Prothrombin (inactive) → Thrombin (active enzyme)
Thrombin is the key enzyme of blood clotting.
5. Conversion of Fibrinogen to Fibrin
Thrombin converts soluble fibrinogen into insoluble fibrin threads.
Fibrin forms a mesh that traps blood cells.
6. Formation of a Stable Clot
Fibrin mesh + trapped RBCs + platelets = blood clot
Clot becomes stronger with the help of factor XIII (fibrin stabilizing factor).
