Winnowing Fan
A winnowing fan is a traditional farming tool used to clean grains such as rice by separating the grain from chaff and dust. In Sri Lanka, it is commonly known as a Kulla and is made by hand using woven bamboo, reeds, or palm leaves.
The fan is flat and oval or round in shape, making it easy to hold and move. Farmers gently shake or toss the harvested grain on the fan, allowing the wind to blow away the lighter husk while the heavier grains remain on the fan. This method uses natural air flow and does not require electricity or machines.
The winnowing fan is widely used in rural villages and is often seen in household yards after harvest season. It represents simplicity, sustainability, and traditional knowledge, passed down through generations. Even today, it remains a symbol of Sri Lanka’s agricultural heritage and close connection with nature.
