”We have buried the latest remains that were transferred by the international Red Cross to the Shifa complex after the legal period had ended, in accordance with the protocol of the committee that manages the remains. A period of time is allotted for families to identify these bodies and remains. Unfortunately, none of these remains or organs were identified. After this period, we as the Ministry of Endowments, carry out our role by transferring these remains from Shifa Medical complex to the cemetery of Deir Al-Balah, the cemetery of the unknown.”

STORYLINE:
The bodies of 53 unidentified Palestinians, along with 86 unidentified human remains, were buried on Friday at a mass burial in a cemetery in central Gaza’s Deir Al-Balah.

Earlier this month, Israel transferred the bodies of 54 Palestinians and 86 boxes containing human remains, all unidentified, to Gaza via the ICRC.

Only one body was identified by a family, while the others were transferred for mass burial.

Israel gave no identification for the bodies and doesn’t allow DNA testing material into Gaza.

Families have to look at photos of bodies and clothes shown by the hospital, to try to identify their loved ones.

“A period of time is allotted for families to identify these bodies and remains. Unfortunately, none of these remains or organs were identified,” said Ziyad Obeid, director of the cemeteries department at the Endowments Ministry.

“After this period, we.. carry out our role by transferring these remains from Shifa Medical complex to the cemetery of Deir Al-Balah, the cemetery of the unknown,” he added.
