Click and Grow Smart Garden 9 week 6, planting Lavender, transplanting basil, arugula/rocket update.

Описание: At the start of week 6, we were growing Basil (3), Red Pak Choi (2), Mini-tomatoes (1), Chilis (1), and Arugula or Rocket in vermiculite (2).

Going into week 7, we grow Basil (3), Red Pak Choi (1 new), Lavender (2), Mini-tomatoes (1), Chilis (1), and Arugula or Rocket in vermiculite (1).

We harvested both Red Pak Choi plants in the past week. Very tasty and I now know to start harvesting the plant earlier, say around week 3-4 depending on growth. The plant responds well to being cut back and grows new fresh leaves.

I have planted one new Red Pak Choi plant so I will test my newfound knowledge in the weeks to come.

I have also planted two new plant pods of Lavender.

We have harvested a lot of basil in the past week or so and the plants respond well to pruning and harvesting, and we see fresh new growth.

The basil cuttings we took have rooted and we planted them in pots with potting soil mix. Stay tuned for progress.

The Chili plant looks good and we are seeing buds forming.

The tomato plant has grown beyond the light fixture. We see nice top formations and buds forming. I will leave the plant to grow and develop.

Finally, regarding the arugula/rocket growing in vermiculite, I really want to add some fertilizer, as I said I would do if needed when I planted the seeds in vermiculite.
But I have decided not to.
Why?
I am afraid the wick system will leak fertilizer back into the water reservoir and thereby possibly affect the tomato and chili plants.
Farfetched, I know, but we have seen that the Smart Garden works really well for leafy greens. We have already harvested lettuce, Pak Choi, and basil.
I want to give the tomato and chili plants the chance to grow without interference and as the system intended before starting to add fertilizer to any plants.
But will I try adding fertilizer in the future? Yes, I will. So stay tuned.

As the growth of the arugula/rocket is going slow, I transplanted one plant into a pot with potting soil mix while keeping the other plant in the Smart Garden.
It was an interesting pot up from a plant cup but it should be fun to compare the growth over the next couple of weeks.
I have placed the pot under one of my full spectrum grow lights, 16 hours on, 8 hours off.

To summarize, the Click and Grow system is truly as easy to use as advertised, and it works. We have already harvested lettuce, basil, and Pak Choi, and the tomato and chili plants are looking great even though the tomato plant is already growing beyond the light fixture.
