It can often take a student a while to master the two octofingering and the key issue is rushing through the practice. in the beginning, to teach the coordination for this important skill, we must stop and think through every fingering transition.
For some students, it may be helpful to have an anchor finger, such as the thumb.
in the left hand, the thumb places down on the dominant and tonic.
in the right hand, the thumb places down on the tonic and subdominant.
the pinky only touches down at the beginning and end of the scale.
The other thing to remember is that the ring finger, finger four for pianists, is only used in the transitions when we are stepping to the next octave. Within an octave we transition using the middle finger or finger 3.
I describe this as going up a staircase, and when we get to the next level, that's when we use the ring finger.
I hope this is helpful for learning two octave scales, it is a challenging task for most musicians but very important for developing agility through passage work.
