Effective for the 2025 academic year, candidates sponsored by relatives (First/Second Degree) under the Non-Resident Indian (NRI) category are INELIGIBILE to participate in the Maharashtra State Counselling process as an NRI.

Redefined NRI Status: The definition of a Non-Resident Indian (NRI) has been updated in accordance with Ordinance VI of 2025. Now, only those who are “not ordinary residents” under Section 6(6) of the Income Tax Act, 1961—and have a certificate issued by an Indian Mission or Post abroad—will be considered NRI. This includes:
Candidates who are themselves NRI
Candidates whose parents are NRI

Priority 1 NRI candidates have the opportunity to secure admission in top prestigious colleges within a reasonable budget. Non-NRI candidates who wish to apply for vacant NRI seats during the Mop-Up round (designated as "Against NRI Quota Seats") without providing standard NRI documentation must declare their willingness for these seats.
This willingness must be given during the registration process for the state counselling, irrespective of whether they register at the start of Round 1 or during the fresh registration window for Round 3 (as there will be no fresh registration in Round 2).

Fee Structure
The fee structure for these Against NRI Quota Seats will vary by institution. Some colleges may align the fee with that of the Institutional Quota (IQ), while others may opt to maintain the fee equivalent to that charged to regular NRI students.
