This webinar took place on 23 March 2022. It presents a recent research report published by the DCED Business Environment Working Group (BEWG) on Dealing with Firm Informality (Will Nielsen and Simon White).
The report furthers the understanding of informality, and the contribution business environment reform can play in dealing with the contemporary challenges in this field. It reviews existing evidence on the informal economy and the tools that can be used to reduce the vulnerabilities of informal firms and their workers while supporting the transition towards formality. It identifies the new and emerging evidence to help donor and development agencies better understand the dynamic between the business environment and enterprise formality, so they can draw on this when formulating new reform-support programmes.
Along with the report findings, this webinar will share two case studies from Cape Verde and Ecuador that highlight lessons we can learn on the connection between informality and business environment reform.
