Eight earthquakes in nine hours, from a box of seafloor ninety kilometers across between Mexico and Guatemala — and that single patch accounted for almost every significant earthquake recorded anywhere on Earth this week. I've been watching this sequence since the magnitude 7.3 broke the Middle America Trench two days ago, and for the first twenty-four hours it behaved exactly the way the textbooks say it should: a magnitude 6.0 aftershock at thirty minutes, a run of 5s, a clean decay curve. Then last night it produced its largest event yet — a full day after it was supposed to be fading. So I went looking for the one measurement that would tell us whether that matters: how deep these earthquakes actually are, because depth is what separates a locked megathrust from a slab cracking under its own weight. And that is where this got strange. Two of the world's best monitoring agencies are looking at the same earthquake and giving depths that differ by a factor of three. What exactly is breaking down there — and why can't the instruments tell us?

🌙 TONIGHT'S DEBRIEF:
• At least eight magnitude 4.5+ earthquakes in roughly nine hours off Chiapas, three of them 5.3 or larger, spread across a 90-kilometer zone
• The global 7-day count of significant earthquakes rose from 137 to 144 — and this one sequence supplied essentially all of it
• A 10-kilometer depth from one agency, 29 kilometers from the other, for the same magnitude 5.7 — the difference between megathrust interface and inside the descending slab
• The 2017 magnitude 8.2 Tehuantepec quake, why it proves this trench can go far bigger, and why its mechanism was not what most people assume
• The publicly stated threshold that would change everything — multiple magnitude 6.0s — which has not been crossed

👁️ WHAT WE'RE WATCHING:
The rate is elevated but the maximum magnitude is holding flat, which is far more consistent with a productive aftershock sequence in a structurally messy triple-junction than with anything worse. What we're waiting on is the reviewed depth solutions, still pending on several of these events, and whether the eastward activity along the Caribbean plate boundary continues or stops. Cascadia's next tremor tally is the other number worth checking.
