I currently know little about the composer of this piece. I believe he came from a French family of music teachers living in Truro, England, and that he won second prize for harp at the Paris Conservatoire in 1845. The Élégie was probably written in the 1870s or 1880s (Schirmer published an edition in 1895). Although the thematic material is not particularly original, the piece is very well written, and its pathos is almost reminiscent of the Argentinian tango in places. If it was ever popular in the past, it certainly merits a few performances today.
