Description: The Arctic tern is a medium-sized seabird known for its remarkable migratory journey. It has a slender body, long, pointed wings, and a forked tail that contributes to its agile flight. This bird is highly adapted for life on the water, often seen gliding effortlessly above the sea.
Size: The Arctic tern measures about 33-36 cm (13-14 inches) in length, with a wingspan of around 76-85 cm (30-33 inches). It weighs between 90-140 grams (3.2-4.9 oz).
Color: Its plumage is predominantly white with a pale grey back and wings. It has a distinctive black cap on its head, red legs, and a bright red bill, which are key identification features.
Distribution and Habitat: Arctic terns breed in the northern polar regions, including parts of Greenland, Canada, and northern Europe, before migrating to the Antarctic during the southern summer. They typically nest on coastal cliffs, beaches, or islands in remote areas.
Behaviour: Known for their incredible long-distance migration, Arctic terns travel between the Arctic and Antarctic annually, covering up to 70,000 km (43,500 miles). They are highly social during breeding seasons, often forming large colonies.
Diet and Feeding: Their diet consists mainly of small fish, invertebrates, and crustaceans, which they catch by diving into the water from the air. They are also opportunistic feeders and can scavenge food from other birds.
Breeding: During the breeding season, Arctic terns build nests on the ground, typically in colonies. They lay 1-3 eggs, which are incubated by both parents. After hatching, the chicks are fed small fish and invertebrates. The young fledge about 3-4 weeks after hatching.
