Cancer occurs when the body's natural cellular repair and defense systems fail to correct or destroy abnormal cells. The human body is composed of trillions of cells that constantly divide and replace themselves - approximately 1.5 billion cells divide per minute, with about 2 trillion cells dividing and dying daily. During this massive cellular activity, mistakes inevitably occur, but the body has sophisticated repair mechanisms and immune system patrols that normally fix damaged cells or destroy them if they cannot be repaired. Cancer develops when these abnormal "mutated" cells escape these natural defense systems and begin dividing uncontrollably.
Cancer prevention can be achieved through several approaches, primarily by avoiding carcinogens (cancer-causing substances) like tobacco, which increases lung cancer risk by 15-20 times. Maintaining a strong immune system through healthy lifestyle choices also helps, as it enables the body to better destroy abnormal cells before they develop into cancer. Early detection through regular health screenings is crucial since cancer is easier to treat when it's small and localized to one area. Cancer stages (1-4) indicate how much the disease has spread, with higher stages representing more advanced spread to distant organs.
Vaccines can prevent certain cancers, particularly the HPV vaccine which prevents cervical cancer. Dr Lynette Ngo explains that 99% of cervical cancers are associated with human papillomavirus (HPV), with about 40 of the 100+ HPV types capable of causing cancer. The virus is sexually transmitted and must persist in the cervix for extended periods to cause cancer - most people clear HPV infections within 1.5-5 years. However, individuals with weakened immune systems may not clear the virus, allowing it to integrate into cervical cells and cause abnormal growth leading to cancer.
While HPV vaccination provides protection against seven virus types, it doesn't eliminate the need for pap smear screenings, which detect abnormal cervical cells and can identify pre-cancerous conditions. The 365 Cancer Prevention Society is currently offering free cervical cancer screening through pap smear tests until March 15, 2025, for individuals aged 35-69 from lower-income families. The key message emphasizes that while cancer isn't 100% preventable, risks can be significantly reduced through healthy lifestyle choices, appropriate vaccinations, and regular health screenings, with early detection being crucial for successful treatment outcomes.
