Colm Holland on the Secrets of Alchemy: 'Your biggest obstacles will become your greatest treasure'

Colm’s journey with Alchemy began 27 years ago, when Colm was a middle manager at Harper Collins. His job was to decide which books would be published globally in the English Language and how many copies to stock in the warehouse.

He took a chance on a relatively little-known Brazilian writer called Paolo Coelho who had written a little book in Portuguese called ‘The Alchemist’.

Colm took a chance and ordered 200,000 copies of the book. Fast forward all these years later and that book is now one of the biggest selling books in history.

‘I just knew that this book was going to be a bestseller,’ says Colm.

Colm invite Paolo to Australia to speak at the Adelaide Writer’s Festival. The queue for signings went outside the building and round the block.

‘I knew it was going to go bananas,’ Says Colm, ‘And it did.’

During his fateful meeting with Paolo, Colm was introduced to Alchemy and found his life changing rapidly.

Colm threw himself into the study of Alchemy: ‘I studied The Alchemist, I studied ancient Alchemy, I studied the works of Carl Jung…’

‘Paolo was an Alchemist for me,’ says Colm. ‘An alchemist is somebody who visits us once in our life at a critical moment in our journey – if we’re on the path this will happen. And it comes at a point when you’re ready to make a choice, so when Paolo came into my life, he was that guy on the stallion [from the book]. He came into my life and he basically said “Not only can you make a choice to keep going, but I’ve cleared the way. I’ve done my alchemy magic, so the things you thought were obstacles and impediments are now going to turn into your greatest treasure.’

Colm’s own book ‘The Secrets of The Alchemist’ is like an instruction manual unlocking the mysteries contained within Palo Coelho’s original book.

But Colm’s spiritual journey didn’t start there.

‘I had a fabulous encounter with unconditional love when I was 18 years old. It changed my life,’ He says. He went on to become an orthodox Christian and taught Religious Education for many years.

Colm's take on Alchemy:

''If you boil Alchemy down to its very core the universe actually only requires that one thing of us. Which is: discover your real passion, know what the fire is in your heart, commit yourself to it to the exclusion of everything else. And – as the story of The Alchemist says – when you do that, all the power of the universe will conspire to help make that happen.'

Colm is now based in the UK and his book ‘The Secret of The Alchemist’ is out 31st July 2020.
