The Kuarup is the ritual heartbeat of the indigenous communities of the Upper Xingu. The annual event is held over several days and brings together more than 3,500 people from eight ethnic groups to celebrate life, death, and rebirth. The participants make long journeys from their villages to the host community, where, painting and adorning their bodies, they sing, dance, and wrestle, marking the pubescence of adolescents and honouring the dead. At the heart of the Kuarup are intricately painted iconographic tree trunks, chopped down in the forest and brought long distances to the centre of the village, each representing a significant member of the community who has died over the past year. Through percussive dance and incantations, the Kuarup enacts a three-day reincarnation ritual accompanied by the haunting sound of the magical flutes of the Xingu. The Kuarup tree trunks are a symbol of nature’s cycle of life and death, of our journey between night and day, of the fluid relationship between human and non-human, and of the village’s indivisibility from the ancestral spirits of the forest.
