A powerful new national campaign is calling on Canadian employers to better recognize the signs of domestic violence in the workplace — and understand their legal responsibilities to support affected workers.
Developed by Women’s Shelters Canada, the ReferHer.ca campaign highlights how common warning signs of domestic abuse are often misinterpreted as poor job performance. In the campaign’s featured message, Anishinaabe activist and filmmaker Sarain Fox delivers a moving on camera letter urging employers to reflect on times they may have overlooked a woman who needed help.
The campaign stresses that workplaces across Canada — both federally and provincially regulated — have legal obligations to provide domestic violence related leave and maintain clear violence prevention policies. Executive Director Anuradha Dugal explains that signs like absenteeism, lateness, distraction, or sudden behaviour changes may indicate abuse rather than poor performance. Employers aren’t asked to investigate — only to notice, ask, and connect workers with support.
Fox reminds viewers that survivors often feel isolated:
“You are never alone.”
