Construction crews in Western China have drilled through the final section of rock in the Xinjiang mountains to finish constructing the world’s longest expressway tunnel. The Tianshan Shengli Tunnel spans about 22km (14 miles) through the Tianshan Mountains in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. It is expected to greatly reduce travel time between the north and south of Xinjiang, as well as improve connectivity with neighbouring countries.
