So... if Superman was never Superboy, who was the Superboy that inspired the Legion of Superheroes?

Original Text: While we're talking about alternate reality #SupermanAnalogue characters, let's spend some time with the Superboy of the Pocket Universe!
So, the Legion of Superheroes had always been built on a foundation that they were inspired by the legends of Superboy. They even developed time travel so they could go to the past and introduce themselves to him.
When DC restructured their continuity after Crisis on Infinite Earths, it was decided that Superman had never been Superboy, but they didn't do a full reboot for the Legion so things got weird...
(Gonna give a shout out to @LegionBlog because they certainly have a better write up on this than I'll do)
Anyway, this started with the legion coming back and encountering Superman, who did not know them, then the classic Superboy shows up. Chaos ensues and they all end up back in Silver Age Smallville.
All the classic staples are there, and they all remember the Legion and it all matches up with the continuity that we had known prior to the Crisis.
(This is when they first introduce the idea that Kryptonite from different realities' don't work on alternate Kryptonians) Anyway, it turns out that this reality is a small sliver in time-space that they have been going to that was constructed by the Time Trapper as a plot.
However, Superboy was still a good person and he brought Superman in to save the Legion while pretending to be loyal to the Time Trapper.
Superboy, along with the Legion, goes into the future to face the Time Trapper. It's a great story and a wonderfully respectful comparison between continuities. This Superboy was created as a foil so that we could understand what's the new Superman was all about.
It then ends with a pretty sad scene as Superboy gives his life to save the Legion. We get a really touching scene with Mon-El who reflects on how Superboy had been his brother for all those years. It was a good way to end that era of the Legion.
However, this would not be the last that we see of that alternate version of Superboy. During Zero Hour, the character shows up, ripped from his encounter in the future, to meet the 90s version of Superboy. This is pretty clearly the same pocket dimension version of the character
The character shows up again in a Superboy Hypertime story, but that's where it starts to get trickier with continuity.
This is not Superman when he was a boy, this is a unique character created to explain continuity issues and wrap up a story that people have been following since the 50s. It also created a fertile setting for future stories, which I will come back to you at a later date.
