Bernard Chevalier, violin. This isn't an easy caprice. There's no such thing as an easy Rode caprice. :-) The opening adagio is good prep for playing Paganini g string pieces as well as gaining confidence doing wild shifts. You've got to have a sense of pitch, what it's supposed to sound like, if you're going to conquer this adagio. You've got to be a boss. If you have time, learn the piece by heart!
Part 2 I don't play this part Moderato. :-) It has many difficult combinations to learn with happily the most difficult coming in the early part. I confess that I relaxed after coming through the first few lines in good shape. I still needed a lot of concentration to deal with complicated bowings and dynamics. I did better on this caprice with dynamics than I did in the other etudes I've recently recorded. It's worth noting that these studies were composed during Beethoven's lifetime. When audiences hear these caprices, I'm often asked about Rode because they like them a lot and can't believe they're just studies!
