Fitness-For-Service (FFS) assessment procedures for evaluating crack-like flaws in components are covered in Chapter 9 of the API 579 standard.
Crack-like flaws are planar flaws that are predominantly characterized by a length and depth, with a sharp root radius. Crack-like flaws may either be surface breaking, embedded, or through-wall. Examples of crack-like flaws include planar cracks, lack of fusion and lack of penetration in welds, sharp groove-like localized corrosion, and branch type cracks associated with environmental cracking.
This tutorial explains level 3 assessment procedures, which provide an option to incorporate a crack-like flaw directly into a stress analysis. Guidelines for performing a stress analysis using the finite element method where the crack is incorporated into the model are provided.
