Excerpt read by the Hartt School Symphony conducted by Britney Alcine, Hartford, CT. Nov. 2024
In 1910 Alexander Scriabin's Prometheus, the Poem of Fire premiered in Paris, a reflection upon the
myth of Prometheus in tone poem form. I find striking parallels between Prometheus and the
biblical Eve. Eve's apple, like Prometheus's fire, takes humanity out of the oblivion of animal
existence and into self-consciousness. In this sense it is representative of a step in evolution, where the collective experience is heightened to a new level not before conceivable. I see this as related to
Rudolf Otto’s concept of the mysterium tremendum, "A mystery before which humanity both trembles and is fascinated, is both repelled and attracted.” Yet, this is also something more logical:
the allowance of humanity into the full experience of life and awareness of all its aspects, positive and negative. Eve's rebellious act is one that represents humanity's self-discovery: the understanding of the truths of life and the command of our own destiny. I intend for my piece to be a continuation of Scriabin's reflection extending now to the myth of Eve, and that rebellion to self actualize is essential.
