Cairns to Kuranda Cable Car after Cyclone

The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway in Queensland’s far north runs for a total length of 7.5km between the Cairns suburb of Smithfield and the village of Kuranda, 330 metres above sea level. The cableway actually comprises two separate cables, the first running 2.7km steeply uphill to Red Peak station, and the second straddling the ancient rainforest for the remaining 4.8km to Kuranda. The second, longer cable includes an intermediate station at Barron Falls, or ‘Din Din’ as it’s known in the local aboriginal dialect. The excellent walkways and lookouts afford travellers fabulous views of the Barron River as it cascades down a total vertical drop of 125 metres (410 feet) to the valley floor below. Unfortunately, more often than not Din Din is merely a token trickle, the vast majority of the water being redirected to the nearby Barron Gorge Hydro Electric Power Station by a weir located upriver of the falls. However, our visit was less than two days after the passing of Tropical Cyclone Imogen! Imogen had made landfall as Category 1 system just north of Karumba on the west coast of the Cape York peninsular, before tracking eastwards towards Cairns. Despite being downgraded to a tropical low, Imogen delivered huge amounts of rainfall and damaging winds to the whole of North Queensland. The upshot of this was that Barron Falls became a breathtaking spectacle, quite literally! The roar was incredible as unbelievable quantities of water plummeted violently down the cliff face. Thanks to the extreme heat and humidity, the falls created a sort of localised weather system as the cascading water evaporated, forming low-level clouds that rose hypnotically from the valley below. Whilst viewing the falls, we suddenly found ourselves caught in an intense tropical downpour that soaked our clothes and our bags. The humidity was so high that I was struggling with condensation … on the inside of my camera lens! Fortunately, I was able to catch some memorable shots of not only the falls themselves, but also the epic journey over and through this ancient rainforest, with brilliant views back towards the Coral Sea and inland towards the Atherton Tablelands.
