Introducing the viper genus, Trimeresurus - the Asian palm pit vipers. The 44 species of venomous snake found in this genus are spread throughout Asia, filling a variety of habitats. Their distinctive slender green bodies and prehensile tails allow them to seamlessly blend into the dense foliage of the forests they call home. Our sanctuary is home to one of planet earth's most ornate species of venomous snake - the Sunda Island white-lipped pit viper (Trimeresurus insularis). These fascinating serpents come from the same island as the world's largest species of lizard, the Komodo Dragon!
To compare this snake with other members of its genus, our videographer Michael heads to Hunan China in search of the iconic green bamboo pit viper (Trimeresurus stejnegeri). The search begins in the famous Mount Mang National Forest Park, which is widely known as the sole habitat of the Mangshan Viper (Protobothrops. mangshanensis). Herping through the misty mountain corridors, Michael and his team locate a dozen of these beautiful snakes, and we take the opportunity to get a closer look at this fascinating group of reptiles!
