STORYLINE:
Hoards of Catholic faithful gathered on the streets of Piornal, in Spain, on Wednesday to pelt the demonic 'Jarramplas' with turnips.
According to local folklore, the Jarramplas was a cattle thief, and on Saint Sebastian Day locals are chosen to dress up in fibreglass armour, a colourful suit and horned devil mask, so villagers can punish them with a barrage of vegetables.
It is difficult to know the origin of the festival; many villagers have different versions.
Some say that the festival comes from the mythological punishment inflicted by Hercules on Cacus; others say that the festival stems from the traditions of native Americans.
Others have suggested that the Jarramplas is a representation of Saint Sebastian himself.
Whatever its beginnings, the festival is a cherished event among the residents of Piornal.
Some 9-thousand turnips are expected to be thrown this year, and around 18-thousand kilos (40-thousand pounds) have been made available, according to local media.
