“Kurai onrum illai, marai moorthy kanna…”
"I have no grievances, O Lord of the Vedas…"
With this soul-stirring refrain begins a journey of serene surrender and spiritual fullness. In this evocative Bharatanatyam performance, Abhinav Saikrishna and team, under the guidance of Sow Aparna Mohite, student of revered Guru Sushma Gopinath of Navarasa DanceAcademy, interprets the beloved Tamil hymn “Kurai Onrum Illai” through expressive movement, intricate rhythm, and heartfelt devotion.
About the Composition:
Kurai Onrum Illai is not a composition of antiquity, but one that carries the weight and grace of timeless bhakti poetry. Penned by Chakravarti Rajagopalachari (Rajaji) — India’s last Governor-General, statesman, and a devout spiritual thinker — the song is a rare blend of modern authorship and classical soul.
Though composed in the 20th century, it is steeped in the rich devotional ethos of Tamil spirituality. It is a prayer, not for favors or relief, but a bold declaration of contentment in divine will. The lyrics evoke the image of a devotee who, having faced life’s ups and downs, turns inward and proclaims — “I lack nothing, for the Lord’s grace is with me.”
Traditionally set in Ragamalika, often interwoven with the poignant tones of Raga Shivaranjani, the composition is a favorite among Carnatic musicians and classical dancers alike. It is often sung in temple concerts, sabhas, and sacred gatherings — echoing through the sanctums of South India’s spiritual geography.
About the Performance:
In this rendition, Sow Aparna Mohite and team brings out the spiritual core of the composition through Bharatanatyam — one of India’s most ancient classical dance forms. Sow Aparna Mohite created this beautiful blend of nritta (pure dance), nritya (expressive dance), and natya (dramatic storytelling), in this song to bring out not only the technical finesse but also emotional maturity of the dancers.
The team, all of whom are students of Navarasa Dance Academy, interpreted this song not merely as display of movement, but a visual hymn — a sincere offering from young hearts deeply connected to tradition. The choreography weaves together the lyrics, rhythm, and rasa (emotion), leading the audience from moments of quiet reflection to soaring spiritual exaltation.
Through every mudra, glance, and rhythmic footfall, he invokes the divine presence — particularly that of Lord Venkateswara of Tirupati, to whom the original song is dedicated.
Why This Performance Matters:
In a world often driven by material desire and outward seeking, “Kurai Onrum Illai” reminds us of the power of acceptance, surrender, and inner peace. This performance stands as a testament to the continued relevance of India’s cultural wisdom and the role of the younger generation in preserving and honoring it.
We invite you to witness not just a dance, but a devotional meditation in motion.
