McKnight reflects on her experiences over 27 field seasons in Antarctica, where she studied the lakes and streams that form oases for life in the cold desert landscape of the McMurdo Dry Valleys. She and her field team adapted to summer flooding and other adverse conditions in pursuit of a deeper understanding of the fascinating microbiota that thrive there. They also welcomed high-profile guests, including Al Gore, John McCain, and a teenage seal that showed up at base camp one summer.
