We were exploring a small glacier in Norway during winter when our adventure suddenly turned dangerous. What looked like solid ice quickly became unstable, and we found ourselves in multiple life-threatening situations.
Winter glaciers can be deceptively dangerous. Cold temperatures make ice harder and more brittle, meaning cracks and collapses can happen suddenly without much warning.
During our exploration, we found ourselves in several dangerous situations. Part of the glacier ceiling above us became unstable, and later one of us unexpectedly fell into a narrow crevasse. Thankfully it wasn’t deep, and we were incredibly lucky to walk away safely.
Even small glaciers can be extremely dangerous. Essential glacier gear like ropes, probes, crampons, and proper planning can make the difference between a safe adventure and a disaster.
