Here we go in spontaneity. If there is a Beatles Ecstasy Scale, we were all fevering at its upper limits at Abbey Road Studios, Summer of 1992. EMI Abbey Road in London was celebrating their 60th year and the Good Day Sunshine Fan Club as part of EMI ABBEY ROAD celebration was treated to a 3-hour recording session at Abbey Road Studio 2 where the Beatles did most of their legendary work.
This was part of the 16-day Beatles Tour that included five days in London and eleven more in Liverpool. I was the only person of about sixty of us to bring along a guitar... "Where's your guitar?" "I thought it would be hokey bringing the guitar to Abbey Road." "GO GET YOUR GUITAR, BOBBY!" "You're right.." and I'm sure glad I did.
The tour bus that Paul McCartney used for the Wings over America Tour would bring us to the historic site for this event. I couldn't contain my excitement and had no idea what to expect. Drummer Les Harris Jr. brought his camcorder so this, as well as a lot of our travels could be captured.
As a follow up on the photos I put on Facebook recently from the recording session, this was video Take 3 of the Lennon/McCartney song "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away," even though the engineer signals the 'go ahead' saying "Take 1," it was our third run through of "Hide.. when he was ready for us. So, from the best Beatles sing-a-longs I could think of it was the first of three songs we recorded. The Yamaha FG335SB (green sunburst) was always sounding balanced and warm and as it came up in the studio monitors, the singers - nearly sixty of us - from opposite sides of the planet, all grew organically along with it.
Many aspects of the recording process are present; multiple takes, the patience, concentration etc., but there was something else going on too. You can see it in all of our faces, it has to be akin to some slice of heaven that unfolded as it all sounded real fine, all together - live. We continued on and recorded "Help" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand" both songs twice. They were really nifty as well but only "Hide Your Love Away" was mixed to DAT as time ran out.
All together, it was an extraordinary experience. Les Harris said '..a once in a lifetime.' The Abbey Road engineer was terrific. He offered me his 'Master's Chair' to rest my feet while he mixed and afterwards handed me the DAT. It was all chilling and fun and I learned a lot - summer of '92 in a two-week-plus sprawling holiday from London to Liverpool and the quick get-away to Scotland - all so fine. (The fish-n-chips in Liverpool was also notable, maybe even equally extraordinary, sadly, there is no video capture of it.)
So, I recently found a working DAT player - a portable Sony in nearby Essex County (LUCKY since mine wouldn't cooperate!,) so I could finally sync the video with the DAT mix down of Hifi audio from the EMI studio board. So, here at last, ENJOY ABBEY ROAD - and may it shine its far-reaching lights forever. Bob Squires, Aug 13th 2025
Many thanks go out always to Abbey Road and its remarkable engineers, to Mark Nelson and David Oliver and the Sony DAT audio tape machine and to drummer extraordinaire Les Harris Jr for the copies from his magic camcorder - the splendid detail of Studio Two (and One - not shown here but to follow,) is in full view.
Many thanks to Charles F. Rosenay !!! for coordinating the U.S. Good Day Sunshine Tour that included the amazing Abbey Road 60th Year Celebration recording session. How cool was that to make happen and be part of? It was 33 years ago today - and I can still hear your voice clearly in the mix! Thanks also to the Yamaha Corporation, Focusrite, Apple MAC, elgato Video Capture and Custom Strings - custom gauge - oh, and Dunlop Picks - light. P=) ..and Les - this is for you - and to all the people who are lucky enough to play in Beatles bands.
