Welcome back to “Hungry! What to eat? Where to eat?” — the show where we uncover great makan places all across Singapore.
Today’s episode brings us to a place that holds a special place in many hearts — the one and only Tiong Bahru Market — which has just reopened after months of upgrading works in 2025!
If you’ve been here before, you’re in for a big surprise. This iconic market has not just reopened — it’s been reborn. Let me walk you through what’s new.
The first thing you’ll notice as you enter is how clean and bright everything feels. The entire market has been repainted, giving it a fresh, modern look while still retaining its heritage charm. The upgraded look is subtle but effective — white walls, polished flooring, and a general facelift that makes the environment a lot more welcoming.
One major improvement is the newly installed large ceiling fans throughout the second floor hawker centre. They’re powerful, quiet, and keep the space much cooler than before. Even during the lunch crowd, it’s no longer a stuffy affair.
Another thoughtful upgrade — and probably the most noticeable — is the removal of steps leading up to the second floor. That’s right, it’s now fully step-free! Whether you’re pushing a trolley, using a wheelchair, or coming with seniors, the access is now more inclusive and elderly-friendly. This is a big win for accessibility.
And let’s talk about something that often gets overlooked — the toilets. Yes, they’ve been completely renovated too! Cleaner, brighter, and much more hygienic than before, with modern fittings and clear signage. Definitely a much-needed improvement.
Now, after exploring all these upgrades, I decided to have my lunch at something unexpected — not a hawker stall, but at Toast Box, which is just next to the market.
But wait — this isn’t your usual kaya toast and kopi session.
Inside this Toast Box outlet is a hidden gem: a stall called First Fish Soup. I ordered their Signature Sliced Fish Soup with Rice, and it really hit the spot.
The broth was clear and comforting, packed with natural sweetness from simmered fish bones. The sliced fish was fresh and firm, and you could taste the quality in every bite. Add in tofu, vegetables, and their homemade chilli, and you’ve got a nutritious, no-frills meal that leaves you satisfied but not heavy.
I paired it with a traditional hot kopi from Toast Box — aromatic, smooth, and a great balance to the light fish soup.
If you’re looking to revisit an old favourite or experience it for the first time, this newly reopened Tiong Bahru Market is a must-visit. It’s cooler, cleaner, easier to navigate, and more comfortable than ever before — and it still serves up some of the best food in town.
So the next time you’re in Tiong Bahru, come check it out. And if you’re in the mood for something lighter, do what I did — head to First Fish Soup at Toast Box and discover this hidden gem for yourself.
