I Can’t Help, Wonder Why
By Mack Hollowpoint
The river glows beneath a setting sun, Amber waves roll where our memories run.
Distant laughter carried on a southern breeze, Fireflies flicker in the hush of ancient trees.
Old friends scattered like autumn leaves, Photographs fading, tucked up my sleeve.
I recall the laughter, the heartbreak, the tears, Summer nights lost through the winding years. Coffee-stained letters, guitar by the rail, Echoes of promises, too stubborn to fail.
Is it chance or fate that brought me this far? Surviving the storms with every new scar. I trace the lines of my weathered hands, Grateful for journeys I never had planned.
I can’t help wonder why the moon still shines on a lonesome sky.
Why love can linger through goodbye,
Why hope survives when the well runs dry.
Gratitude burns in the light of each day,
I can’t help, wonder why.
Boarded the midnight train, the ocean sang me home, from cobblestone streets to vast prairie loam.
Mountains and valleys, rivers that divide, searching for meaning in the places I hide.
Wind in the willows, dust in my shoes, every horizon promising something new.
Through bitter winters and sweet July rain,
I’ve stitched broken dreams with joy and with pain.
Resilient hearts are made from hope and despair,
Finding their rhythm in the open air.
I can’t help wonder why the moon still shines on a lonesome sky.
Why love can linger through goodbye,
Why hope survives when the well runs dry.
Gratitude burns in the light of each day,
I can’t help, wonder why.
So here by the river as twilight descends, I carry my stories, forgive my old friends.
Peace in my heart, love in my eye, I let go, but I can’t help, wonder why.
