As we started doing the design work on the tire carrier for the new JL Wrangler, we knew we had to adhere to our same requirements that we used when designing the carrier for the TJ & LJ Wrangler as well as the JK Wrangler. A woman with a child in her arms had to be able to open and close it with one hand and it had to be able to support up to a 40-inch tire. We have never been a fan of bumper mounted tire carriers because most models rattle and sag over time, in some instances in as little as a few months. Unlike other Jeep models, the JL Wrangler has reinforcements where the tailgate mounts, so we decided to do a much stronger tailgate mount by making the tire carrier a part of the hinge assembly.

The JL Wrangler is a completely new vehicle compared to its predecessor, the JK Wrangler. This required a redesign of the carrier itself. The new hinge design went from a 3-bolt to a 4-bolt design per hinge. We also added a reinforcement plate inside the body to strengthen the hinge mounting area. The new Rusty’s 3/16” and 1/4” steel fabricated tire carrier and tailgate mount is mounted to the tailgate with a total of 16 bolts. We added 4 to the tailgate area to reinforce the area by the door handle. In the design process, we noticed flexing in the area around the rear door handle and our design eliminates this issue. The tailgate and the tire mount pivots in our 1/2-inch hinge on “Oilite” oil embedded bronze bearings.

We also wanted the tire carrier to look as good as the vehicle on which it is mounted. The new JL Wrangler has much cleaner lines as well as being equipped with a rear camera and a 3rd brake light. The Rusty’s JL tire carrier has provisions for the 3rd brake light as well as the rear camera. The rear camera is enclosed in a fabricated capped tube that protects the camera when a larger rear tire is installed on the carrier. The wiring needed for the factory 3rd brake light and camera is all “plug and play”. The Rusty’s JL tire carrier is e-coated for inside and outside protection and then finished in a great looking satin black powder coating. If your JL Wrangler is not equipped with a license plate mounted to the rear bumper,we offer license plate mount that can be added, but keep in mind that you will need to wire a light from the mount into your harness should you feel a license plate light is required. We also offer an optional “Hi Lift” jack mount for the JL tire carrier, although the “Hi Lift” jack mount will only fit a 37-inch and smaller tire.

Another unique feature of the Rusty’s JL tire carrier is the ability to change the wheel bolt pattern. We know that many people are doing axle swaps to handle bigger tires. These swaps often require changing the wheel bolt pattern. The 1/4-inch steel fabricated tire mount has the option for the factory 5 on 5 bolt pattern, as well as the popular axle swap bolt patterns of 8 on 6.5 and 8 on 170. The Rusty’s JL tire carrier is even adjustable for maximum departure angle and better visibility out of the rear window. The tire carrier allows installation of up to a 40-inch tall tire while retaining a one handed operation. Because of the tire adjustability, you can feel confident that the spare tire will clear most aftermarket bumpers.

The Rusty's tire carrier is e-coated for inside and outside protection and then finished in a great looking satin black powder coating. Optional accessories are also available.
