Obviously, good smoothies need powerful blenders. Powerful blenders are noisy. Noisy Blenders need a muffler (aka Sound Enclosure Top Cover). This video demonstrates a significant noise reduction when blending with the Blendtec Blender inside the OMNISHIELD Sound Enclosure Box - About the dB meter being moved away, it changes the decibels by 2 downward. Keep in mind that I didn't have the experience yet to lock in the measurement... And also, you are normally not sticking your ears to the blender but rather stand away about 2 feet or so and your ears, although your ears should be the point of measure, are about 2 to 3 feet away from the noise. And even then, there is no difference in the decibel level whether the meter is right on the box/blender or at your ear... it's minimal. At 60 dB it is not critical. However at 100 dB it is very critical because decibels are measures on a bell-shaped curve, the higher it goes the more critical / damaging it gets and then at some point above 105dB it levels out (critical factor). That is why OSHA requires hearing protection for equipment handling starting at 105 dB, although that 95 is already piercingly noisy for some sensitive people.
